Tinplate is a sustainable packaging for food and industrial appliance. Because of its tin layer it cannot be recycled in closed loop and is internationally directed as metal waste - although the soft steel and the tin are precious metals.

PROASSORT developed a two-step method for large-volume circular tinplate economy:

In a first step the 5 to 10 wt.% organic burden is thermally removed from the post-consumer scrap.

In a second step the tin is completely harvested by chemical decoating.

The result is two premium secondary metals: clean and pure soft steel and TIN GRAIN.
